Rangers have suffered ‘enormous’ Ibrox blow – Stefan Borson

Rangers have suffered an “enormous blow” after missing out on a place in the Champions League this season.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider their failure to qualify for European football’s premier club competition could cost the Scottish giants between £25-35million.

Rangers were beaten 3-1 on aggregate by Dynamo Kyiv after the Ukrainian side secured a 2-0 second-leg victory in the third qualifying round at Hampden Park on 13 August.

The defeat also cost Philippe Clement’s side a guaranteed £3.7million cash injection, with Dynamo Kyiv or Red Bull Salzburg in line to receive that windfall if they lose their Champions League play-off tie.

The Glasgow club will now have to settle for a place in the Europa League, while their Old Firm rivals Celtic will be playing in the Champions League after securing the Scottish Premiership title last season.

Rangers failure to qualify for Champions League will prove costly

Borson insisted Rangers’ failure to qualify for the competition will “cost them” due to the significant financial rewards on offer.

“It’s an enormous blow from a financial perspective,” Borson told Football Insider.

“I have seen figures of £40-50million, but I don’t think it will be as much as that because they would have been very unlikely to have got out of the group.

“But clearly, missing out on the new group revenues is going to be significant.

“I would think they have probably lost £25-35million on the new deal, so that’s an absolutely enormous amount of money for a Scottish team.

“You do wonder why there isn’t bigger investment, even on short-term loans for example to try and get through a qualifier of that sort.

“Perhaps they are just miles behind Dynamo Kyiv in terms of what they had to play with. But it’s such a significant amount of money.

“It feels as though it’s worth a bit more investment in trying to get the players in line to get through that one game because it makes such a material difference to your profit and loss.

“But they haven’t made it and there is no question it will cost them.”
