Expert salutes Rangers behind-the-scenes ‘unsung heroes’ normally blamed for everything

The medical department at clubs like Rangers are “unsung heroes” – especially in the pandemic era.

That is according to injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

As quoted by the Daily Record on 15 October, Steven Gerrard heaped praise on the club’s “fantastic medical and sports science team”.

The Rangers boss was speaking in particular reference to the work the behind-the-scenes team had done over the international break.

They have been charged with monitoring players away with their national sides and addressing complications thrown up by pandemic red tape.

Dinnery credited Gerrard for giving the medical department their dues.

“I am always one for championing the cause of the backroom staff,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“They rarely get the praise they deserve and are one of the first in the firing line when things go wrong.

“If a player breaks down, the first shots are fired at the physio and the medical department. More often than not, it’s nothing to do with them.

“So the more managers like Gerrard who come out and give them credit, the better, particularly in light of Covid.

Rangers

“They are unsung heroes who are quite often in the background and overlooked. Their contribution to the club and its success can be really big.

“Their juggling of responsibilities becomes even more important as the budget becomes tighter.”
