Rangers hit by Goldson ‘disaster’ and Van Bronckhort ‘can’t be happy’ – pundit

Frank McAvennie insists Rangers need to sort out Connor Goldson’s future quickly.

The former Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims uncertainty over the defender’s future is “damaging” the club.

A Rangers source has told Football Insider that Goldson, 29, has rejected a new contract and appears set to leave when his deal expires at the end of the season.

The defender is still a key player under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, starting all nine games the new boss has overseen.

However, McAvennie insists Van Bronckhorst will not be happy with Goldson’s situation.

“I mean, what is going on there?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Van Bronckhorst can’t be happy with that. I know they have just had the Patterson money but they can’t lose Goldson for nothing.

“They won’t get much for him now but it’s better than him leaving on a free.

“So you are telling me they are going to play the rest of the season with a player who isn’t committed to the club?

“It’s a recipe for disaster in my book. I’m not sure what Rangers are doing.

“They are demaging the club with decisions like this. It will annoy the players, I’m sure. It needs to be sorted quickly.

“Surely they can spend the money and bring in a replacement? I wouldn’t be happy with this if I was a Rangers fan.”

The centre-back has played 193 times the Glasgow giants to date, with 31 appearances coming this season.

Van Bronckhorst also has Calvin Bassey, Leon Balogun, Jack Simpson, Filip Helander and new signing James Sands to call upon at centre-back.

In other news, Alex McLeish claims Rangers are set to “sacrifice” millions of pounds after Ibrox update.
