Rangers icon issues critical Fashion Sakala claim

Giovanni van Bronkhorst has taken the pressure off Rangers star Fashion Sakala by playing him out wide.

That’s according to former Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the attacker’s recent form.

In recent Premiership games, Sakala, 25, has been used as a winger rather than an out and out striker.

He came on as a right-winger against Celtic on 1 May and scored his side’s leveller in the 1-1 draw.

McLeish insists the pressure is now off Sakala as he is not being burdened with leading the Gers attack.

“When you play a front three, all three players interact,” McLeish told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge.

“You see it at all of the top teams, they float about and aren’t always in the same position.

“I think Sakala being played out wide has just taken a bit of pressure off him.

“He wants to be an out and out centre forward. But when you don’t have the running of some of the great players, it’s hard.

“When you play out wide, you see the game differently. He has to do a different job and he can still get in behind with his speed.

“The coach will be trying to do everything he can for him and hopefully that pays off.”

Sakala has scored 11 goals in 46 total appearances for Rangers since joining the club in the summer of 2021.

He joined on a free transfer from KV Oostende after bagging 16 goals in 34 games during 2020-21.
