Rangers in ‘big trouble’ after Connor Goldson latest – pundit

Rangers are in “big trouble” if Connor Goldson misses the Glasgow derby against Celtic.

That’s according to former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Goldson’s return from injury.

Despite missing the Gers’ return to action against Hibernian on 15 December, the 30-year-old played 90 minutes against Aberdeen and Ross County.

Goldson provided the assist for Scott Arfield’s stoppage time winner against Aberdeen that helped keep his sides’ gap to Celtic at nine points.

The centre-back made his return this month after picking up a thigh injury in the Bears’ 7-1 hammering by Liverpool back in October.

McAvennie insisted Rangers need to be careful with the defender ahead of the derby clash on 2 January.

Goldson is a big player for them,” he told Football Insider.

For the sake of a couple of games, because if he misses the Celtic game they are in big trouble.

Forget about [James] Tavernier, forget about the rest of them. Goldson is the main guy at the back.

If he is not ready and he plays another game, especially the way everyone is firing into tackles now. It could be a dodgy one for him. Only the people behind the scenes at Rangers will know.

Goldson has made 19 appearances for the Gers across all competitions this season.

Celtic

Last season the centre-back made 61 appearances for the Light Blues across all competitions.

He scored four goals and provided four assists in those outings and was an integral part of helping the side reach the Europa League final.
