Pundit ‘stunned’ by new Rangers signing Sakala’s Premier League confession
Fashion Sakala has revealed that he chose to join Rangers ahead of two Premier League teams – and that reflects very well on the Ibrox club.
That is according to ex-Premier League shot-stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the inbound Rangers signing’s recent interview comments.
Quoted by the Daily Record last Saturday, Sakala admitted: “I had two teams in the Premier League interested in me and I met them in England.”
Rangers announced that the Zambian forward has signed a four-year deal on pre-contract terms on 4 May.
The 24-year-old joins from Belgian side KV Oostende where he netted 16 times in 34 appearances in 2020-21.
Kenny admitted he was “stunned” by Sakala’s revelation, insisting that the pulling power of manager Steven Gerrard will have been key in bringing him to Glasgow.
He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “I’m stunned by that, to be honest. I’d have thought he’d want to go to the Premier League and play.
“No disrespect to Rangers or the Scottish league but the Premier League is probably the best league in the world.
“But the fact he’s turned them down reflects really well on Rangers.
“They have got an unbelievable manager in Steven Gerrard. He is going to have a lot of pull when it comes to signing players.
“Rangers are flying after winning the title back after so many years. The atmosphere at the club is the complete opposite to Celtic.”
Rangers options up front could look dramatically different in 2021-22.
Jermain Defoe is yet to agree a new Ibrox contract while Alfredo Morelos looks set to attract more transfer interest.
In other news, EFL left-back would “jump” at the chance to join Rangers, claims top pundit.
