Sources: Rangers fine axed Josh McPake for disciplinary issues and could now terminate deal
Rangers could terminate Josh McPake’s contract a year early after failing to offload him in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
The Glasgow giants were hoping to get the on-loan winger, 21, permanently off their wage bill two months ago, but there was no concrete interest to take him.
McPake, 21, has lost his starting place at loan club Queen’s Park and was once again on the bench as the team was announced for Saturday’s Championship clash against Morton.
The sixth loan of his career has turned sour due to form and discipline issues off the pitch.
It is believed that McPake has been fined by his parent club to throw new doubt over his future at the club where he has a contract until the summer of 2024.
Rangers are looking for a resolution on his future as he’s a high earner among the fringe players at the club.
One option being considered is to terminate his agreement and hand him a sizeable pay-off.
McPake does not figure in Rangers’ long-term plans and has not developed as the club’s coaches would have hoped after being handed a three-year contract in 2021.
Scouts from a number of rival clubs watched him in action recently for Queen’s Park against Ayr, but the attacker failed to impress.
McPake worked his way up the ranks at the Rangers academy after joining the youth setup during his childhood years.
He was widely considered one of the most talented players in the club’s youth system and was named the Academy Player of the Year for his efforts in the 2018-19 season.

Loan stints at Dundee, Greenock Morton, Harrogate Town, Morecambe and Tranmere Rovers followed before he signed with Queen’s Park in 2022.
McPake has made 28 Championship appearances for his loan club this season, scoring four times and supplying three assists to help Queen’s Park top the league table.
