Rangers must seal summer swoop for proven PL goalscorer who is ex-Gerrard team-mate

COMMENT

Rangers will surely undergo a major facelift in the summer transfer window as Steven Gerrard may want to stamp his own authority on the squad ahead of next season.

Gerrard has already been linked with some of his former team-mates, but one that he absolutely must look to seal a summer swoop for is Bournemouth forward Jermain Defoe, who represented England alongside the Liverpool legend.

Defoe joined Bournemouth last summer after Sunderland were relegated from the Premier League, but his spell on the south coast has been a bit frustrating for him as he has only scored four goals in 25 appearances across all competitions.

In comparison, the centre-forward scored 15 goals in 40 total appearances for Sunderland last season as they were relegated.

Although it’s clear that the 35-year-old is not the striker he once was, he would absolutely tear it up in Scotland and Rangers must 100 per cent snap him up in the summer if he looks to leave the Cherries.

Defoe has proven himself as a prolific goalscorer across his years in the Premier League.

Only six players have scored more goals than him in the Premier League having netted 163 goals across spells at Tottenham, West Ham, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Bournemouth.

It’s clear that Gerrard will have some pulling power at Ibrox in the summer to get some of his former team-mates to reunite with him.

And with it likely that a number of strikers will be leaving Glasgow over the coming months, getting in Defoe should be one of the top things on Gerrard’s to-do list.
