Rangers must win immediate battle as massive pressure mounts at Ibrox
COMMENT
It was not a surprise to anyone that Rangers finally sacked Graeme Murty after the 5-0 loss to Celtic, as the pressure mounts for Gers battle to finish in second place in the Scottish Premiership.
In the statement on the Gers website that accompanied Murty’s departure, it was announced that coaches Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson would take charge of the team for the last three games of the season.
The duo have the task of winning the battle to finish runners-up in the league table, and if the Gers end up in third place or worse – as Hibernian have plenty of momentum – the entire season has been a complete waste of time and money.
For there to be any signs of progress made at Ibrox this season, the Gers must overcome Aberdeen in the last three games of the season and finish one place better than the third placed they managed last season.
If they finish third again it shows that the club has stood still for a season, is no further forward and has wasted millions on two managers and lots of players who have not cut the mustard for the Light Blues.
In the grand scheme of things getting the new manager in is the biggest issue that the Gers currently face, but finishing runners-up in the league title is a close second.
