Keith Wyness: ‘Rangers in big trouble if 49ers deal collapses’

Rangers are on the hunt for a permanent new manager with Barry Ferguson appointed in the meantime to lead the club on an interim basis.

Ferguson, who has replaced sacked ex-boss Philippe Clement, is an Ibrox legend with coaches Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor also turning out for the Glasgow giants.

The search for a permanent replacement for Clement comes amid takeover interest in Rangers – with 49ers Enterprises holding talks over a deal.

In the Scottish Premiership, the Gers sit second in the table and some 13 points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic – and are also out of the Scottish Cup.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on the Rangers manager search.

Rangers facing ‘serious problems’ if 49ers talks fail

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested he is more worried about the takeover than the appointment of a new boss.

Under the current ownership, Rangers reported a £17.2million loss for the 2023-24 season back in October of last year.

Wyness insisted “even Pep Guardiola won’t make a difference” if the Ibrox club’s takeover doesn’t go through.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It isn’t just the manager, it’s the board which needs to be changed.

“That’s where the 49ers come in. But if that deal falls apart, then there will be serious problems.

“It doesn’t matter if they brought Pep Guardiola in – it wouldn’t make a difference.

“Until the club’s fixed at the top level, I don’t think any manager could do a good job.

“It’s about proper backing and financial ability to back the man who comes into the job.”

Sean Dyche backed to succeed Clement at Rangers

But Wyness has previously told Football Insider (21 February) that Sean Dyche would be the perfect replacement for Clement at Rangers post-takeover.

He claimed Dyche’s style would suit the Gers as they “don’t have the greatest array of talent in their squad”.

The Englishman was sacked at Everton last month after leading them to Premier League safety in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns.
