Rangers news: Allan McGregor tipped for new role after ‘shutting everyone up’ – pundit
Kevin Phillips has tipped Allan McGregor to step into a player-coach role at Rangers at the end of the season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England striker insisted it was great to see McGregor “shut everyone up” with his recent performances.
The veteran stopper, 40, has come under criticism this season for a catalogue of costly basic errors.
He proved his worth once again in the 3-0 win over Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League last week (10 March) when he became the oldest goalkeeper to save a penalty in the competition.
As quoted by the Scotsman after the game, Giovanni van Bronckhorst insisted he has “full confidence” in McGregor and he was still an “important” part of the team.
The former Scotland international was then dropped to the bench for the 3-0 Scottish Cup victory over Dundee on Sunday (13 March).
And Phillips has suggested his time as a player at Ibrox is coming towards an end.
He told Football Insider correspondent Ewan Kingsbury: “First and foremost, it’s great when people get to step up and shut everyone up by doing what you’re good at. That’s great.
“But with his age, he might potentially look at stepping onto the coaching staff in a player-coach rile o he can be back up if they need it.
“Then he can coach the youngsters. It just makes sense to use that experience.”

McGregor has kept 201 clean sheets in 430 games for Rangers across all competitions in two spells at Ibrox.
He is under contract until the end of the current campaign.
In other news, an Ibrox source has revealed Rangers have set their sights on signing Josh Stones.
