Sources: Rangers board green light new Scott Arfield deal

Rangers chiefs are ready to green light a new contract offer for Scott Arfield, sources have told Football Insider.

The midfielder, 34, is one of eight senior Gers players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season.

It is believed that Arfield has opened talks with the club about extending his deal by a further 12 months.

The Canada international is no longer a regular starter but manager Michael Beale values the player’s experience and leadership, and he is also regarded as a strong character in the dressing room.

There is no agreement yet in place but the Ibrox board are willing to offer a new deal to Arfield and the ball will then be in his court as to whether he accepts.

Arfield has had to accept a more limited role under both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Beale this season.

He has made 33 appearances in all competitions this season, which have yielded an impressive eight goals, but he has made just seven Scottish Premiership starts and completed a full 90-minute match on only two occasions.

The midfielder has not started a match in any competition since 18 January – and has had just 13 minutes of match time since – but is still well regarded by the Ibrox coaching staff.

Since joining Rangers on a free transfer from Burnley in 2018, Arfield has made 223 appearances for the club in total.

He was crucial to Rangers’ league-winning campaign in 2021/22 when he worked under Steven Gerrard and was coached by Beale.

Prior to his time at Ibrox, Arfield spent five seasons with current Championship leaders Burnley, three years at Huddersfield Town and three seasons with Falkirk – the team he graduated from in 2007.
