Rangers news: 'Game-changing' Man City claim made after Joe Aribo decision - McLeish

Alex McLeish has hailed Giovanni van Bronckhorst for his “experimental” tactic of playing Joe Aribo as a centre-forward for Rangers.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, compared the 25-year-old’s makeshift role to that of Phil Foden at Manchester City.

Aribo started up top against both Celtic and RB Leipzig in the absence of Kemar Roofe or Alfredo Morelos.

He was subbed off just before halftime in Thursday’s 3-1 win over Leipzig after taking a shot to the face.

McLeish admitted Van Bronckhorst has taken a risk with his strategy but insisted it has paid off.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You tend to think you’ve got to do something experimental. Sometimes that can badly backfire on you.

“But if you’ve got an intelligent player in there, very much like Man City, they have kind of changed the game a little bit in terms of false number nines. Playing Phil Foden through the centre

“This wasn’t a choice for Giovanni, this is because of injury. These guys have done a good job. It causes confusion for the opposition because of the difference and the personnel changes in different positions.

“Aribo is tightly marked when he plays through the middle. What he does do is come off the game and links up, comes into little pockets and gets the ball with people running beyond him.

“These are good tactics as well and a good strategy. As I said, it was forced upon Giovanni. Giovanni has seen something.

“I think a few of us would have kind of said that makes sense.”

Aribo has played 54 times across all competitions this season.

He has scored eight goals and contributed 10 assists.
