Rangers news: 'Incredible' James Tavernier claim made by McLeish

Alex McLeish has insisted James Tavernier will have inspired the rest of the Rangers squad to lift their games with his “incredible” performances.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 30-year-old may have alleviated fans’ fears over their domestic form this season.

The right-back scored his 18th goal of the campaign against Ross County at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

He also contributed his 17th assist in what was his 56th appearance this term.

McLeish admitted some Rangers fans will have been concerned about the Gers’ ability to break teams down domestically.

He suggested Tavernier’s form may have allayed any worries moving forward.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Rangers fans have been saying: ‘How can we not break teams down?’ in terms of domestic results.

“In Europe, both teams attack each other and there are spaces. It was a question of Rangers making sure they didn’t have any defensive lapses but also using the attacking prowess that they have.

“Their captain, again, has come to the fore, James Tavernier. He’s scored vital goals, penalties, just incredible surges forward that have been a feature of Rangers’ success.

“It’s been outstanding from the captain. He’s definitely raised the bar for the rest of the players. They’ll say: ‘Oof, this guy’s playing at some level. If I’m in his team, I’ve got to be at the same as him.'”

Tavernier has been a potent threat both domestically and on the European stage.

He has scored seven times in 13 Europa League appearances en route to next week’s final in Seville.
