Rangers news: Keith Wyness shares major Ibrox transfer update

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers’ new shirt sponsorship deal won’t have a tangible impact on their transfer business.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Gers are a “work in progress” and change is needed before they can flex their muscle in the market.

Rangers confirmed last month (18 September) they have agreed an extension with the Kindred Group for the Unibet brand to continue as the club’s front-of-shirt sponsor beyond this season.

The existing deal is believed to be worth around £1.5million per year – and they could bank up to £3million from the new agreement depending on their on-pitch performance.

Football Insider revealed last week (19 September) that Rangers could see their commercial revenue increase to around £30million next season.

However, Wyness insisted the numbers involved won’t yet make a difference on the “football side”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The numbers we’re talking about are minimal.

“Even though it’s a big shirt deal, 93% more than last time, it’s not a lot of money.

“There has to be a lot more work before any of it reaches the football side.

“They’ve got to monetise the international fan base, get the player trading right – it’s a work in progress.

“And they’ve got to admit that to themselves. It’s the first step in the process they’re on right now.

“I’ll be watching them closely.”
