Rangers news: McAvennie suggests the real reason Todd Cantwell started Celtic bust-up

Rangers ace Todd Cantwell was “stupid” for instigating a post-match bust-up with Celtic defender Callum McGregor after the Old Firm.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie slaughtered Cantwell, 26, and claimed he only shoved McGregor, 30, to “play to the cameras”.

Sky Sports footage showed the Englishman confronting McGregor after the full-time whistle before Leon Balogun pulled him out of the escalating bust-up.

Cantwell was dropped to the bench by Philippe Clement for the all-important Ibrox showdown, which ended 3-3, but was brought on in the 69th minute.

Todd Cantwell thinks he’s a ‘hard man’, but he is not – McAvennie

McAvennie admitted that there is a “good player” in Cantwell, but was far from impressed with his full-time antics.

“It was Cantwell again,” he told Football Insider.

“From what I know, he’s not getting a game at the moment so he’s taking it out on somebody else.

“It was Greg Taylor and Callum McGregor he shoved.

“He’s playing to the crowd and the cameras because he can’t do anything else!

“He did something similar with Reo Hatate [in the Scottish Cup semi-final last season] when he didn’t let him have any water.

“There’s a good player in there but it was a bit stupid, he does stupid things.

“He tries to play the hard man, but he’s not a hard man.

“I can understand that he’s upset because he’s not getting minutes, but come on.”
