Rangers news: Pundit issues Giovanni van Bronckhorst sack claim as 'overhaul' mooted

Giovanni van Bronckhorst must be given a full pre-season to transform fortunes at Rangers before deciding on his long-term future, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 47-year-old should be given the opportunity to “overhaul” his Gers squad.

Rangers have slipped six points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table, with their Old Firm rivals currently odds-on favourites to clinch a domestic treble.

The Ibrox club have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Europa League but must overturn a 1-0 deficit during the second leg against Braga this Thursday (14 April).

Van Bronckhorst’s transfer dealings have done little to turn the tide, with Aaron Ramsey, Amad Diallo and James Sands failing to nail down first-team berths.

Whelan insisted he is “sure” the Dutchman will be backed further in this summer’s transfer window.

“I think you can only judge a manager when you’ve given him a full pre-season,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s come in, learned a lot about the club and the players. Yes, he played for Rangers – but it’s barely recognisable now from what it was.

“Look, he’s done extremely well in Europe. That’s where Celtic have the added bonus, they aren’t travelling every week and playing these extra games.

“He’s trying to manage everything, and I think he’s doing a decent job. The Old Firm games have been disappointing, but you can’t get rid of a manager without giving him that pre-season to turn things around.

“He’ll be backed in the window as well, I’m sure. This is Steven Gerrard’s squad and he’ll want to overhaul it to his liking.

“For me, they have to give him another season and judge him on that.”
