Rangers news: Pundit pleads to SPFL after unexpected development – ‘Don’t do it’

Kevin Campbell has called for the Scottish Premiership to abandon plans to introduce Video Assistant Refereeing as Rangers and Celtic continue to push.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said “the whole thing is a problem” when discussing VAR’s potential use in Scotland.

According to The Scottish Sun (28 February), Scottish Premiership clubs are concerned after learning VAR would cost them £118,000-a-year each.

The figure is said to have come as a shock with the initial expected cost to be half of the aforementioned figure.

Rangers and Celtic have been leading the push for the introduction of technology in the SPFL.

When asked by Football Insider if VAR was worth £118,000-a-year for clubs, Campbell said: “Don’t do it.

“It’s as simple as that. Don’t do it. The whole thing is a problem.

“If I’m honest with you, I would rather the referee make the decision and if it’s a bad one, it is a bad one. If the referee makes a bad decision, as it used to be, we accepted it. You had to because it was human error. But now with technology, we are still getting decisions wrong and that’s infuriating. It makes no sense.

“Do you know what? You would be better off keeping the £118,000-a-year in the pockets of those clubs. That can go a long way at those clubs.

“The technology doesn’t work. The whole process is faulty. Keep your money clubs. Just go with the current system.”
