Rangers news: Scott Arfield could start v Braga as big names set for axe - McLeish

Alex McLeish has tipped Giovanni van Bronckhorst to make changes to his Rangers starting XI for Thursday’s Europa League tie against Braga.

The former Ibrox boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the likes of Scott Arfield, 33, could be in line to start in Portugal following Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Celtic.

Van Bronckhorst left the likes of Borna Barisic, Glen Kamara, Steven Davis and Amad Diallo on the bench against the Hoops.

Meanwhile, Arfield and Fashion Sakala both came on in the second half to try and instigate a change.

McLeish suggested Van Bronckhorst will look to shake up his starting line-up for Thursday night’s game.

“I think Gio will reconsider his starting XI choices,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“He’ll be analysing that game, as I know all coaches do after the game. I did it myself back in the day. You beat yourself up for a couple of days.

“You think: ‘Well, did he do so well?’ and you might have to have a one-on-one or a chat with him. See why he didn’t perform to his best.

“Do I go for others? Do I put grafters in, like Arfield, who will work for the team in a different way?

“He’s got certainly got food for thought. After a loss to your biggest rivals, you’re certainly going into it a little bit negative. You’re not as bubbly as you have been in recent weeks.

“It only takes a couple of days of training to get in the zone again and for good training sessions to be constructed by the coach and his fellow staff.

“It’s a massive game and it’s almost like a cup final.”
