Rangers manager update: 45-year-old front-runner responds on Twitter to speculation
By Amir Mir
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has stated that Rangers are a “strong club” but he is only interested in his current job.
The Scottish Sun claimed on Monday that the Dons will demand £1million if the Gers want to acquire the 45-year-old highly-rated boss.
Mcinnes has guided the Dons to second in the Scottish Premiership, behind runaway leaders Celtic, but ahead of their Old Firm rivals.
Rangers manager Mark Warburton left his post at Ibrox on Friday with the Glasgow club struggling in the league after earning promotion last season.
The Gers faithful were expecting their club to challenge their rivals Celtic for the SPL title, but instead, they currently find themselves 27 points behind Brendan Rodgers side.
McInness was installed as favourite to take the job but the front-runner has now effectively pulled out of the race.
This was Mcinnes’ response when asked about the vacant post at Ibrox as posted by Aberdeen’s official Twitter account.
“I’ve never been one to speak about speculation and my focus is totally on Aberdeen,” said Mcinnes. “Rangers are a strong club and will always attract people but all I’m interested in is Aberdeen.”
At this moment in time, the Dons are sitting on 43 points from their 23 games level with the managerless Gers, who have played one game more than their rivals.
The duo have met on two occasions this term, first in September when Mcinnes’ side recorded a 2-1 win in front of their home fans, before losing by the same scoreline at Ibrox.
They will next meet in the SPL on April 9, where the former Scottish champions will no doubt have a new man at the helm.
