Rangers now face a series of ‘big fines’ – Keith Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Rangers will face “bigger and bigger” fines if their fans continue using pyrotechnics.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed he is “the first one to encourage fan excitement”, but insisted fireworks are “very dangerous”.

Rangers, Celtic and Motherwell have all been charged by the SPFL over the use of pyrotechnics during the Scottish League Cup semi-finals at Hampden Park last month.

In 2023, specific law banning the use of pyrotechnics inside Scottish stadiums was introduced.

Rangers and Celtic face off for the second time in the 2024-25 campaign on Sunday (15 December) when the two sides contest the Scottish League Cup final.

The Ibrox club have already been fined twice by Uefa this season for the fans’ use of pyrotechnics on the road in the Europa League.

Rangers pyrotechnics are ‘very dangerous’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “These fines will just get bigger and bigger if they keep repeating it.

“It’s very dangerous.

“We all know pyrotechnics are great for the atmosphere, but this has gone way beyond that.

“I’ve had experience in grounds where it can be really dangerous, even at Aberdeen.

“It’s a fine line. I’m the first one to encourage fan excitement, presentations and tifos – but I’m afraid pyrotechnics have got to be controlled professionally.

“The fans controlling them is very dangerous.”
