Rangers’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pursuit takes fresh twist as he closes in on deal

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in talks to agree a new job amid strong rumours that he is in the running to be appointed as Rangers manager.

Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers last week after overseeing their worst start to a Scottish Premiership season and being hounded by supporters for weeks on end as a result.

The 49ers Enterprises, headed by chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice-chair Paraag Marathe, are now searching for a new boss to lead the club forward and take them back to competing with Celtic each season.

Steven Gerrard recently rejected the chance to take over at Rangers after being their first-choice for the vacant job, and Danny Rohl and Kevin Muscat have been named as potential new hires in recent days.

Former Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been strongly suggested as a target for Rangers by old teammate Paul Scholes, but they may be beaten to securing his services by another organisation soon.

Solskjaer in talks with Sweden over vacant head-coach role

The Sun have also reported that Solskjaer has spoken with Ibrox chiefs in recent days, but Football Insider revealed that Kevin Muscat is now the favourite for the post after Rohl was the frontrunner for the Rangers job.

It looks unlikely that the Man United Champions League winner will be taking over in Glasgow anytime soon, with FotbollDirekt (14 October) reporting that he has held talks with the Swedish FA over taking charge of their national team.

Jon Dahl Tomasson was sacked by the organisation following two dismal World Cup qualifying defeats to Switzerland and Kosovo, and Solskjaer could soon be set to take over.

Graham Potter has also been linked with the Sweden job, but the aforementioned report states that he, nor any boss other than Solskjaer, have held talks about being appointed.

The Norwegian striker was believed to be a main candidate when Tomasson was hired in February 2024, and the Swedish FA may see him as the perfect appointment to get the best out of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres.

Rangers must make their final decision very soon

10 days have now passed since Martin was relieved of his Rangers duties following a poor start to his tenure, but it feels like the club are no closer to an appointment with the international break now all-but over.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (13 October) that Rangers are aiming to hire a new boss before the end of the week, and they need to get a new man in prior to their clash against Dundee United on Saturday (18 October).

Time is running out for that to happen, even though numerous targets have been sounded out, and the longer it takes then the more the pressure will heap on the 49ers to get it right.

Football Insider understands that Rangers have narrowed down their managerial shortlist to include both Rohl and Shanghai Port coach Muscat, so they clearly have an appointment in mind, and one of those two needs to be offered the job officially in the coming days.
