Rangers out-of-contract stars: Who will stay and who will leave in 2024 summer transfer window

Rangers currently have nine senior stars who are set to depart the club at the end of the season.

On-loan stars like Abdallah Sima and Fabio Silva are set to return to their parent clubs while long-serving players like Borna Barisic and Kemar Roofe have just months before they become free agents.

Football Insider has analysed the latest on these players’ contracts and situations at Ibrox, spoken to sources and assessed the chances of them staying at the club.

Oscar Cortes

Cortes moved to the Gers on loan in the January transfer window from RC Lens with an option to buy and has impressed in his first seven outings.

While the midfielder’s fee has not yet been revealed, Rangers would not have secured a move for the Colombian without a view to make it permanent – especially after his exciting and prolific outings so far.

Verdict: STAYS

Borna Barisic

The Croatian looks well-placed to exit Rangers after six years of service.

Sources have told Football Insider (15 February) that the left-back is ready to quit the club this summer when his contract comes to an end.

Subpar performances and his failure to nail down a starting role under Clement means the 31-year-old is surely on his way out.

Verdict: GOES

John Lundstram

Fans have been clamouring for the former Sheffield United ace, who has been instrumental for Clement’s resurgent side, to pen a new deal.

Talks with the Englishman remain underway, but sources have told Football Insider (11 March) that they have recently stalled.

Amid interest from English clubs, Rangers will surely pull out all the stops to convince Lundstram to extend his stay.

Verdict: STAYS

Fabio Silva

Silva has been a quality addition since his arrival on loan from Wolves and has bagged four goals across 13 appearances so far.

The latest information Football Insider has learned (9 March) is that the club hope that Champions League qualification can help fund a permanent deal for the striker.

Wolves forked out a reported £35million for Silva back in 2020 and will be keen to recoup as much of that as possible, but a huge £20million financial boost for reaching the Champions League would put Rangers in a strong position.

Verdict: MAYBE

Ryan Jack

Seemingly constant injury setbacks have marred Jack’s hopes of having an impact this season.

The midfielder once again picked up a “small injury” before their Benfica clash, with Clement admitting he intended to start him in the last-16 Europa League clash.

Rangers could do with a more reliable option going forward and will unlikely retain the 32-year-old.

Verdict: GOES

Abdallah Sima

Despite being out injured for the last nine league games, Rangers fans have not forgotten about the Brighton loanee’s influence.

Well-placed sources told Football Insider (8 March) that the Gers will break their transfer record to sign him if they land a huge Champions League transfer kitty.

Brighton are willing to sell the attacker permanently if their £10-15million valuation is met and Rangers would be foolish not to snap him up if they can afford it.

Verdict: MAYBE

Kemar Roofe

While Roofe has made an impact this season, his growing age does not gel well with the club’s long-term plans.

Football Insider has been told (10 March) that the club are prepared to let him leave as a free agent and recruit an “A-list” replacement.

Rangers

The injury-prone high-earner looks set to leave, and it is likely best for all involved.

Verdict: GOES

Leon Balogun

The 35-year-old was brought back to the club primarily as cover to the backline having penned a one-year deal in the summer.

He has filled in when needed but has made just one league start in 2024 and looks unlikely to displace the likes of John Souttar and Connor Goldson.

Verdict: GOES

Jon McLaughlin

The veteran shot-stopper has not made an appearance for Rangers in over a year and looks set to leave in the summer.

Sources revealed to Football Insider (17 February) that he is set to walk away after holding talks with the club.

Robby McCrorie has taken the spot as backup to Jack Butland, leaving McLaughlin little hope of returning to the side.

Verdict: GOES
