Announcement soon: Rangers plan revealed after agreement reached – Sources

Rangers are set to imminently confirm they have agreed to host Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen during the World Cup break, sources have told Football Insider.

An announcement, which could come as early as Tuesday (8 November), will reveal an agreement for the fixture to take place at Ibrox on 10 December.

The two clubs have been locked in talks to arrange the match ahead of the resumption of the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers are keen to play top-level opposition in preparation for the second half of the season.

Leverkusen and the Glasgow giants are familiar foes in recent years, with the two pitted against each other in the Europa League last-16 clash in 2019-20 when Steven Gerrard was in charge.

His old Anfield sparring partner Xabi Alonso is the manager now of Leverkusen, who are 14th in the Bundesliga table.

The Glasgow giants play Hearts and St Mirren this week and then pause for four-and-a-half weeks before their 15 December Scottish Premiership return against Hibernian at Ibrox.

There is some considerable doubt as to whether Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be in the dugout for that match.

Football Insider revealed earlier on Tuesday that the Dutchman is set to remain in charge of Rangers this week but is still facing the possibility of the sack during the World Cup.

Ibrox chiefs held talks on Monday about Van Bronckhorst’s position and decided to stick with their under-fire manager up until the mid-season break.

There have been growing calls from supporters for Van Bronckhorst to be fired in the wake of Sunday’s 2-1 Scottish Premiership defeat at St Johnstone, which leaves the Glasgow giants seven points behind Celtic in the title race.
