Rangers player ratings v Celtic – Butland shines, 1/10 loses seven duels
Rangers have been dealt a huge blow in their bid for the Scottish Premiership title after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Celtic on Saturday (11 May).
Matt O’Riley handed the Hoops the lead before John Lundstram put through his own net, with Cyriel Dessers getting on the scoresheet with the Gers’ only shot on target in the Old Firm clash.
Philippe Clement’s side enjoyed just 32 per cent of the possession after Lundstram was sent off just before half-time at Celtic Park.
Football Insider has analysed the Rangers players’ performances out of 10 against Celtic.
PLAYER RATINGS
Jack Butland [9]
It was another top performance from Jack Butland. The goalkeeper kept Rangers in the game when he denied O’Riley from the spot just minutes into the second half. Although his pass completion rate was significantly down at 46 per cent, he made six saves, three of which were from efforts inside the box. He couldn’t do anything about either goal.
James Tavernier [3]
It was a sloppy performance from James Tavernier when his side really needed him to turn up. The Gers captain won just four of his eight duels and recorded a 57 per cent pass success rate, having given the ball away 23 times. He was also dribbled past twice as he struggled defensively again.

John Souttar [4]
John Souttar made a crucial intervention to prevent Celtic from taking an early lead, but that’s as good as it got for him. Before being subbed at half-time, the centre-back failed to make any tackles as the Hoops forwards were allowed too much time and space on the ball.
Ben Davies [6]
After being drafted into the starting lineup, Ben Davies was probably the pick of the Rangers defenders. He made six clearances, blocked four shots and made one tackle throughout the afternoon.
Borna Barisic [4]
It was another unconvincing display from Borna Barisic. The left-back struggled to get to grips with the threats posed down the Celtic right. Although it was his cross that led to Dessers’ goal, he failed to find a teammate with any of his five long balls forward.
Rangers midfield had a miserbable afternoon against Celtic
John Lundstram [1]
Lundstram probably hasn’t had a worse game in professional football. The midfielder let O’Riley run off the back of him for the opener before putting through his own net on 38 minutes. He was then sent off for a reckless challenge on Alistair Johnston following a VAR check. The Englishman won just three of his 10 duels afer failing to make any tackles. A shocking afternoon for him.

Mohamed Diomande [3]
Another Rangers player who struggled to impose himself on the game was Mohammed Diomande. He won just four of his 12 duels and recorded a 75 per cent pass success rate, having touched the ball just 28 times despite playing the entire 90 minutes.
Dujon Sterling [6]
It was a decent performance on the right-hand side of midfield from Dujon Sterling. He got up well to win a header and set up Dessers’ goal in what was the only aerial duel he won all afternoon. Sterling recorded an 88 per cent pass success rate and played two key passes.
Tom Lawrence [3]
Tom Lawrence was completely anoymous. The attacking midfielder touched the ball just 20 times and failed to have any shots on goal or create any chances.
Rangers attackers did reasonably well despite limited service
Fabio Silva [5]
It was a mixed perfromance from Fabio Silva. While he showed a bit of confidence and looked to make things happen at times, the Portuguese missed a couple of big chances in the first half. He also failed to complete any of his dribbles and gave the ball away 15 times.
Cyriel Dessers [6]
There wasn’t a lot more Dessers could do after receiving very little service. Although he touched the ball just 11 times, he was in the right place at the right time to head home his goal. The forward won three of his five duels.

SUBSTITUTES
Ross McCausland [4]
Ross McCausland only had 10 touches in the second half as he failed to make much of an impression on the game.
Nico Raskin [5]
It wasn’t an easy game to come into, but Nico Raskin did a reasonable job, making two tackles in the final half an hour.
Ridvan Yilmaz [6]
Ridvan Yilmaz was the pick of the Rangers substitutes. He won five of his six duels and completed both of his attempted dribbles.
Scott Wright [N/A]
Although Scott Wright had a couple of touches in dangerous areas, he didn’t have long enough on the pitch to make an impact.
Kemar Roofe [N/A]
It was a similar story for Kemar Roofe after coming on for the final few minutes of the game.
