Rangers player ratings v Hearts: One player is 5/10 in Ibrox win
Rangers closed the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership to six points with a 2-0 win over Hearts at Ibrox on Saturday as they brushed aside the Jambos in an impressive victory.
The Gers started the brighter of the two teams but couldn’t capitalise on a few early chances and get themselves in front.
Craig Levein’s Jambo’s got into the game and started causing problems for their hosts and forcing a couple of good saves from Wes Foderingham to keep the score at 0-0.
Rangers were pretty direct going forward in the first-half and put Hearts centre-backs John Souttar and Christophe Berra on the back foot but lacked that killer final pass to fire themselves into the lead.
As the first-half wore on the Light Blues increased the pressure on the visitors in a fairly frenetic opening 45 minutes before Jamie Murphy opened the scoring five minutes before the break.
The striker made a delightful run into the box and showed a cool head to round the keeper then pass it into the net.
Murty’s side started the second-half in a similar vein to the first and could have been 2-0 within seconds of the re-start through Daniel Candeias but the striker was beaten to the ball by Jon McLaughlin.
The Gers piled on the pressure as they looked for a second goal but spurned a number of gilt-edged chances to double their lead and kill the game off.
With just a few minute left, the Gers made it 2-0 when Russell Martin got on the end of Candeias’ cross to tap home from close range.
The win over the Jambos takes the Gers to six points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic ahead of their clash with Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Sunday.
