Sources: Rangers set sights on signing Keanu Baccus
Rangers are plotting a move for Australia World Cup star Keanu Baccus, sources have told Football Insider.
The St Mirren midfielder, 24, enhanced his growing reputation with an impressive showing for his country as they reached the last 16 of the tournament.
Rangers are in the market for midfield reinforcements as doubts continue to surround the long-term future of Glen Kamara.
It is believed that Baccus figures on the Ibrox club’s wanted list as they shortlist potential targets going into the January and summer windows.
The defensive midfielder joined St Mirren on a free transfer during the summer from Western Sydney.
He has made an immediate and big impact for the Buddies, where he has started 13 Scottish Premiership matches among 15 appearances in all competitions.
Those games have yielded two goals from his deep-lying position protecting the St Mirren defence.
Baccus has 18 months remaining on his contract after joining on a two-year deal.
Rangers would be able to offer him a big pay hike given their greater resources, exemplified in the club-record revenue of £87million for last season.
Michael Beale marked his first match in charge of the Glasgow giants by pairing Ryan Jack and Kamara in central midfield on Thursday night against Hibernian.
Jack played the full match, while Kamara played 87 minutes before being replaced by Scott Arfield.
A third central midfield regular John Lundstram started at centre-back alongside Jamie Sands, who has also operated in midfield this season.
