Rangers predicted to ‘blow up’ in title race by ex-Aberdeen chief: ‘It’ll be fantastic to watch’

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill could prove to be the difference in the final six matches of the Scottish Premiership season.

That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who is predicting the Hoops to beat Hearts and Rangers to the title.

Hearts currently hold a one-point advantage at the top of the table, and are looking to end a 66-year wait for a league title.

The Jambos could win the title against Celtic at Parkhead on the final day of the season, whilst Danny Rohl’s Rangers are searching for their first league title since 2021.

Celtic could win a fifth consecutive title, but O’Neill’s side know they will likely have to win all of their final six fixtures to stand a chance.

Scottish Premiership season to go down to the final day

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes the Scottish Premiership season is set up for an “exciting” finish.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Hearts and Rangers may “blow up” in the title race as the pressure increases.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The other week I said that I thought St Martin O’Neill would come through with his experience and knowledge.

“Celtic are looking in the back seat right now of the three. It is exciting. Have Hearts got it all to go with them? Are Rangers coming through with a push?

“Something tells me that Hearts and Rangers still might blow up, and I’m going to stick with my original forecast of Celtic coming through from on the rails and pipping them at the post.

“It’ll come down to the last game of the season, and it’ll be fantastic to watch. But at the moment, I’m sticking with my original gut feeling that experience will win the day.”

Ex-Ref weighs in on Celtic vs Hearts controversy

Hearts fans were fuming when the post-split fixtures revealed that they would face Celtic in a potential final day title showdown.

It is usually tradition that the league leaders play at home on the final day, but former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett told Football Insider that Hearts’ clash at Celtic could have been planned for weeks due to safety issues and to satisfy broadcasters.

Meanwhile, Rangers will travel to Falkirk on the final day, whilst the other top six showdown sees Hibernian take on Motherwell.
