Rangers profit from major injustice as Connor Goldson footage emerges – ‘it’s embarrassing,’ says pundit
Frank McAvennie has claimed Scott Arfield’s winning goal for Rangers against Aberdeen should have been disallowed.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker claimed that there is “no point” in having VAR in Scottish football if they don’t check potential handballs.
As shown on Sky Sports (21 December), Connor Goldson appears to use his arm to encourage the ball into the direction of Arfield who turned it into the back of the net.
Referee Willie Collum gave the goal and VAR Greg Aitken did not feel Collum had made a clear and obvious error that deemed another look at the incident.
Despite being 2-1 down at half-time, the Gers managed to claw their way back to a 3-2 victory over the Dons.
According to the Scottish FA’s handball rules, a handball situation will be a free kick even if accidental, if the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm.
McAvennie insisted the incident should have at least been look at by the VAR official.
“For the goal, Goldson, it came off his arm and they scored,” he told Football Insider.
“They never even checked it. I was thinking, what is the point?
“If the referee does not see it then fine. But there are people sitting in an office looking at it and they still never saw it. It is embarrassing now.“

Celtic’s win over Livingston on Wednesday (21 December), meant the Gers’ late winner was not enough to close the nine point gap to their Glasgow rivals.
Michael Beale will be hoping his side can continue winning ways before they face Celtic on 2 January.
