Rangers ready stunning ‘£8m’ signing spree – Keith Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted he expects Rangers to spend between £5-8million in the January window.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested he expects “unusual signings” as the Ibrox club try to “unearth a diamond”.

Rangers have appointed Fraser Thornton and Patrick Stewart as chairman and CEO respectively this month, with the January transfer window set to open in a matter of days.

Philippe Clement’s side have endured a mixed 2024-25 campaign, with a successful Europa League showing being let down by poor performance in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers are well-placed to progress to the knockout stages in Europe, which could prove crucial to maintaining Scotland’s coefficient on the continental stage.

Clement could be given ‘£5-8m’ for new Rangers signings, says Wyness

Wyness admitted he is unsure who will be making the key decisions on transfers with Stewart and Thornton only recently arriving at Ibrox.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The problem Rangers have is that the recruitment side is pretty unstable in terms of who is actually leading it.

“I’m not sure how they’re going to make these transfer decisions.

“I would think that Rangers will spend between £5-8million in January.

“They’ve steadied the ship, they’ve got back into second place – and they’ve got the chance to kick on in Europe.

“They’ve got to refresh the squad and have a go.

“They won’t be challenging for the title, but the pressure is off Clement again.

“The coefficient is so important for Scotland. They’ve got to keep moving – standing still is death in football.

“I do expect some unusual signings, and if they can unearth a diamond – that’s what everyone hopes for.”
