‘Rangers red lights flashing after Davide Ancelotti latest’
Rangers have reportedly shortlisted Davide Ancelotti for the Ibrox hot seat in what could be his first-ever job in management.
It has been widely reported that Ancelotti, 35, has been approached over the vacancy – but is not the only candidate on the shortlist at Ibrox.
He is leaving Real Madrid with father Carlo, who is taking up the international job with Brazil ahead of next year’s World Cup.
Davide has been working with his legendary father since taking the fitness coach role with Paris Saint-Germain in 2012.
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has explained why he sees “big red lights flashing” at Rangers.
Ancelotti ‘won’t understand’ Rangers, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted the Italian will lack understanding of the job ahead of him at Rangers.
The Glasgow giants will not win a trophy this term and their only Scottish Premiership triumph in the last 14 campaigns came in the 2020-21 season.
Wyness insisted Ancelotti’s link with ex-Everton sporting director Kevin Thelwell is the reason why he is being considered for the role.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
1 | Celtic (C) | 36 | 88 | 82 |
2 | Rangers | 36 | 71 | 37 |
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Kevin Thelwell has gone from Everton to Rangers. Of course, he worked with Carlo Ancelotti at Everton and Davide was there as a coach.
“Thelwell had a chance to view and observe him there.
“I personally think it would be a really bad decision.
“I don’t think he’ll understand the bear pit that Glasgow is, he won’t understand the beast that Rangers is as a football club and the demand from the fans.
“Rangers’ overriding priority is to beat Celtic. Any manager is measured by that.
“Is Davide Ancelotti the man to do that? I really don’t think so. If they do it, I see big red lights flashing for Rangers.”

Rangers could accept Igamane offer
Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed that Rangers could be forced to sell star forward Hamza Igamane in a bid to boost their transfer budget this summer.
The Record reported on 6 May that Rangers’ hopes of investing significantly in the summer transfer window could be severely restricted by Uefa’s financial fair play (FFP) rules.
Rangers’ new owners could decide to move several players on this summer in a bid to boost the club’s transfer budget, with Igamane likely to be their most valuable asset.
