Rangers scrap plans for Fabio Silva deal – sources

Rangers are very unlikely to seek a permanent deal for on-loan striker Fabio Silva this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the attacker’s inconsistency during his six-month loan move has put Gers chiefs off seeking a permanent move.

It is believed that Rangers had been planning to make a move for Silva, 21, with Football Insider revealing (2 April) that they intended to contact his parent club Wolves to enquire about a cut-price deal.

Now, they have abandoned these plans amid his poor form – especially considering that a reduced fee would still be a hefty amount of the Gers’ summer budget.

Rangers ditch plans for permanent Fabio Silva summer swoop

The Portugal under-21 star failed to make an impact at Wolves following his huge £35million move in 2020.

He moved to Ibrox on a six-month loan deal in January until the end of the season and has managed to score just four goals across 19 appearances in all competitions.

The likes of Cyriel Dessers and Abdallah Sima have frequently outperformed the youngster with their vastly superior goal hauls this term.

Silva has been fielded as a centre-forward and left-winger by Philippe Clement this season and has shown some flashes of brilliance, but he has been often criticised by Rangers supporters.

He does not feature in the long-term plans of his parent club either, with Football Insider revealing (5 April) that Wolves are willing to accept a “huge” loss and sell him this summer.

Rangers sit second in the league table and most recently booked their spot in the Scottish Cup final after their Hampden Park win against Hearts on Sunday afternoon (21 April).

Next, they will travel to St Mirren for their league clash on Sunday (28 April).
