Rangers set for ‘Todd Boehly’ takeover after £150m news – Keith Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has backed private equity to come in for Rangers with a “Todd Boehly lite” taking ownership of the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted “now is the right time to strike” for interested parties after the Ibrox club failed to secure Champions League qualification.

According to City AM (27 August), Rangers are attracting takeover interest from American investors who value the club at around £150million.

It is claimed a number of the existing shareholders at Ibrox are thought to be open to selling.

Boehly took control of Chelsea in 2022 to become one of nine Premier League clubs majority-owned by US investors.

Rangers board told to step aside for ‘Todd Boehly lite’

Wyness claimed Rangers’ current owners must step aside as they haven’t got “deep pockets”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “A Todd Boehly lite coming in would be the perfect situation for Rangers.

“They could have a smaller private equity group come in.

“Historically, Scottish talent has been there and it still is now – there’s still a big market.

“Celtic have shown they can bring players in from overseas and sell them on, they have a very healthy balance sheet.

“Rangers have now got the problem that they’re without Champions League football for this season.

“But that’s an opportunity for a buyer. Now is the right time to strike.

“The current board have shown they haven’t got the deep pockets, so it’s time to step aside and sell to someone who has.

“At some stage, someone will pick the club up and run it properly.”
