Rangers set sights on ‘high-quality loan signings’ – Stefan Borson

Rangers could target bringing in some high-quality loans in the January transfer window due to their lack of available funds for permanent deals.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Scottish giants appear to have limited flexibility to bring in new signings despite their hopes of closing the gap on Celtic.

Rangers currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership table, nine points behind joint leaders Celtic and Aberdeen.

Philippe Clement’s side have, however, had a solid start to their Europa League campaign after claiming seven points from their opening four games.

But there is expected to be limited funds made available to spend in January after Rangers revealed they made a £17.2million loss in their latest accounts for 2023-24.

Rangers unlikely to spend big in January

Borson doesn’t expect there to be big spending at Ibrox in the mid-season window due to the Glasgow side’s financial situation.

He told Football Insider: “Rangers do have an issue compared to Celtic when they are not in the Champions League.

“This is going to be bumper year for Celtic given how well they are doing in the Champions League group.

“It looks like they are going to get a couple more games because I suspect they are going to have a qualifier for the knockout phase and maybe they could get into the knockouts.

“Rangers have to almost turn away from comparing themselves to Celtic for the time being from a financial perspective because they just don’t have the same sources of revenue.

“The Europa League is just not the same. If you were to compare what you get for a win in the Europa League versus what you get for a win in the Champions League, they are multiples apart.

“Celtic are going to have a much better financial year this season.

“What do Rangers do about it? They can try and invest to compete going forward, but if you were to look at the financials, they look like they have got pretty limited flexibility right now.

“I wouldn’t expect there to be big spending in January. Maybe they can do it with high-quality loans and that type of thing, but it’s much harder to compete on that basis.

“But the big thing they have got to do is get themselves into the Champions League because it dwarfs any other revenue stream in Scottish football.”
