McLeish: Goldson ‘taking a risk’ at Rangers after Campbell’s transfer reveal

Connor Goldson may be “taking a risk” by biding his time and assessing his options before he exits Rangers.

So says ex-Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 29-year-old centre-back, who is out of contract in June 2022.

This site revealed on 2 December that former Brighton defender Goldson has rejected a new deal and is keen on a return to the Premier League.

The Athletic‘s Jordan Campbell reported last Thursday (23 December) that there is almost no chance of Goldson departing in January.

McLeish suggests that the Englishman may be waiting for a sufficiently attractive offer to arrive when he is a free agent next summer.

“In the modern day, there is some give and take between the club and player,” he told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“But this smacks of Connor trying to look at his options. Maybe there has already been some interest. These are things that we know go on in football.

“You can’t really be sure that Goldson is already thinking about something else. Is he taking a risk this way? Maybe.

“But I believe that footballers are always in charge of what their next step is going to be.”

Goldson was an integral part of the Rangers side that reclaimed the title after 10 years in 2020-21.

He has featured 31 times for Rangers in the current campaign, scoring once and providing two assists.
