‘Rangers takeover is a game changer’ as top source reveals 49ers timeline

Rangers are the subject of concrete takeover interest at last with fans dreaming of returning to the summit of the Scottish Premiership after falling behind Celtic in recent years.

The Ibrox club could have new ownership by April amid talks with 49ers Enterprises and Paraag Marathe, who are also in charge of English Championship side Leeds United.

Investment at the Glasgow giants is much-needed with the club struggling to turn a profit after failing to qualify for the Champions League in back-to-back seasons.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has revealed Rangers’ potential path to success should the 49ers complete their buyout.

’49ers could take a season’ to put Rangers right, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted it could take a season to right the ship at Ibrox after years of neglect.

Rangers are currently without a permanent manager after Philippe Clement was replaced with the appointment of Barry Ferguson on an interim basis.

Wyness insisted the Gers can take advantage of their potential links with Leeds – but only once they “get their house in order”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It will be a majority of the club which is bought, so it’ll be a game changer for Rangers.

“It may take a season to sort things out and get the squad up to scratch, it’s going to take a while to sort out the recruitment – which has been very poor for four or five seasons.

“Sorting out Murray Park and the academy has to also be a priority.

“The 49ers have already got the tools in place at Leeds, and there’s the potential for Red Bull to get involved as well.

“There’s a lot of experience for Rangers to utilise properly, once they get their house in order.

“It is a game changer for Rangers financially.”

Rangers ‘burning money’ under current ownership

Finance expert Stefan Borson has told Football Insider (24 February) that Rangers are “burning money” in their current ownership structure.

Rangers have recently received a £3.6million injection from their current owners in the form of a new share issue.

Borson claimed that share issue will have been needed to fund day-to-day operations at Ibrox.

Rangers reported a £17.2million loss for the 2023-24 season back in October of last year – while Celtic posted a profit of £17.8million for the same period.
