Rangers tipped to complete £4.5m January signing after Ibrox deal is done - pundit

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Rangers to reinvest the £4.5million they received in compensation from Aston Villa for Steven Gerrard into their playing squad.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted £4.5million is a “lot of money” for Rangers.

Gerrard moved from Ibrox to Villa last week after just over three years in charge of the Gers.

BBC Sport reported (November 11) the Premier League club have paid £4.5million to Rangers for Gerrard’s services.

Aston Villa also confirmed he has been joined by Gary McAllister, Michael Beale, Tom Culshaw, Scott Mason and Jordan Milsom in the Midlands.

The Gers have put David McCallum, Brian Gilmour, Jermain Defoe and Colin Stewart in charge of first-team matters as they continue their search for a new boss.

They are preparing the side for their crucial Scottish League Cup semi-final against Hibs at Hampden at the weekend.

“The compensation is built into their contracts and it makes sense to me,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“When you’re a manager, you can’t just get up and leave. It suits both parties.

“Rangers getting £4.5million, it’s a lot of money for them. They could use that to sign a new player in January and I think they will.

“It just makes sense to me.”

Rangers relied on heavily on free transfers over the summer with Fashion Sakala and John Lundstram moving to Ibrox for nothing.

Juninho Bacuna moved from Huddersfield Town for no upfront fee but the deal is based on appearances with a big sell-on fee.

In other news, the Rangers board may have struck a ‘clever’ January transfer ‘agreement’ with Gerrard.
