Rangers tipped to complete deadline-beating Ross Barkley deal after talks – pundit
Kevin Campbell has claimed Rangers would be getting “one hell of a player” if they complete a deadline-beating deal for Ross Barkley.
The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 28-year-old will be looking for somewhere to “prove himself” after becoming a free agent.
According to Football Scotland (30 August), Rangers have been contacted by Barkley’s agent about a potential move for the midfield star.
The former England international was released by Chelsea on Monday (29 August) after an underwhelming four-and-a-half year spell at Stamford Bridge.
Barkley made 14 appearances for the Blues last season and had a mixed loan spell at Aston Villa during the 2020-21 campaign.
Rangers completed seven summer signings but didn’t do any business on transfer deadline day (1 September).
Campbell suggested last season’s loan for experienced star Aaron Ramsey won’t put the Gers off signing Barkley.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think they’ll be stung by Ramsey.
“Ramsey is obviously a lot younger and he’s looking for somewhere to play and prove himself again.
“That’s really important. He’d be on a free transfer, no fee involved.
“There was talk of Everton getting him back, but if Rangers get involved then they’d be getting one hell of a player.
“This is a guy that, on his day, can be unplayable – so it’d be a good bit of business by Gio van Bronckhorst.”

Barkley can seal a move to English and Scottish sides past the 1 September deadline after being released from his Chelsea contract.
The Ibrox club currently sit behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership standings.
