Rangers tipped to pull plug on Goldson talks after Ibrox source details ‘massive blow’

Noel Whelan has suggested Rangers will pull out of contract talks with Connor Goldson after their latest offer was snubbed.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 28-year-old has had his heart set on leaving Ibrox for some time now.

Ibrox sources told Football Insider on Thursday (2 December) Goldson has rejected a contract extension offer at Ibrox as he eyes a move back to England.

The defender’s current terms expire at the end of the season and the club were keen to tie him down before the summer.

With their latest proposal turned down, Whelan suggested Rangers would pull the plug on negotiations.

Asked if this latest snub would signal the end of talks, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, it seems that way, doesn’t it?

“I think it was a big blow that he had such a good relationship with Steven Gerrard. I think that was probably a turning point as well.

“It’s been ongoing. You would think that after winning the Premiership and their run in Europe they would have nailed him down, if he wanted to stay on a new contract, before now.

“It seems like he had it in his head and in his heart that he kind of wanted to leave in the first place.

“So yeah, it’s a massive blow because he’s been a big fixture at the heart of the defence for Rangers. He’ll be hard to replace.”

Rangers

Goldson has played 187 times for Rangers since joining from Brighton in 2018.

He has made 25 appearances so far this season, with one goal under his belt.

In other news, Rangers have opened talks with sensation and want deal done by 1 January.
