Rangers to offer Kenny McLean the captaincy as talks advance – sources
Rangers could appoint Kenny McLean as immediate club captain if they can secure his signature this summer.
That is according to Football Insider journalist and Scottish expert Daniel Bowers, speaking to Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.
Football Insider revealed on 26 June that Rangers had entered into preliminary talks with Norwich City for McLean, whose current deal at Carrow Road runs until 2026, but with the club option of an extra year.
The midfielder is expected to cost around £1m as Philippe Clement and the Gers recruitment staff undergo a major squad rebuild.
Rangers are working on a deal for McLean, 32, and Bowers has suggested they could sweeten their offer with the promise of the captaincy, if James Tavernier is to leave the club amid strong links to a reunion with Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq.
Rangers could sign Kenny McLean and give him the armband
Rangers have already completed a chunk of their summer transfer business, with five new faces plus the fulfilled obligation to buy Mohammed Diomande following his loan last season.
Amid the departures of experienced midfielders John Lundstram and Ryan Jack from Ibrox, the club are looking to bolster not only the middle of the park but the dressing room, with McLean potentially bringing over 600 professional games’ worth of experience.
Bowers claims McLean would be ideal given his seniority, pedigree with the Scotland national team, and the fact he grew up a Rangers supporter.

With the Light Blues potentially able to sign the Norwich man for a smaller fee of no more than £1m due to his age, McLean is thought to be highly regarded as a viable option to add steel to the midfield and a leader to the squad.
Norwich are also keen to hold up their side of the deal and allow McLean to move on, despite his having played every Championship match for the Canaries last term.
