Rangers to sack Philippe Clement after Celtic clash? Wyness shares ‘huge’ claim

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Rangers sacking Philippe Clement would be a “huge mistake” – even if they lose the Scottish League Cup final.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Belgian is “not to blame” with the board instead needing to accept responsibility for allowing the Gers to slip “light years” behind their rivals.

Rangers take on Celtic on Sunday (15 December) at Hampden Park with Clement getting the chance to retain the Scottish League Cup trophy against the club’s most fierce rivals.

Meanwhile, the Ibrox club announced on 25 November that Stewart will begin his new chief executive role on 16 December – the day after the final.

The new CEO’s first job could be a decision on sacking Clement – who has turned results around in recent weeks after an early-season slump.

Rangers are without a loss in each of their last nine games across all competitions and have picked up impressive European results in that time – a 4-1 win over Nice and draws against Olympiakos and Tottenham.

Clement sack would be ‘huge mistake’ for Rangers, says Wyness

However, Clement is yet to beat Celtic since taking charge at Ibrox last year.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think sacking him would be a huge mistake.

“Clement is not to blame. The Rangers board have sold players and not bought well.

“Celtic are now light years ahead financially and on the pitch.

Rangers

“It’s a cup final, and in an Old Firm game anything can happen. Rangers could pull off a miracle.

“But it’s a six or seven nil – maybe some heads would have to roil. But even if that happened, I don’t think Clement should be the one to go – it should be the board.”
