Rangers told to complete signing of ‘next Ally McCoist’ – Keith Wyness
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers need a “figurehead and focal point” in the summer transfer market to become a “scoring machine” again.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed a striker in the mould of Ally McCoist is needed, with the club legend scoring 355 goals across 15 years at Ibrox.
Football Insider revealed on Monday (3 June) that Rangers are working on signing a prolific striker in the upcoming summer window.
Kemar Roofe has left the club at the end of his Gers contract, while Fabio Silva has returned to Wolves after the expiry of his loan deal.
Right-back James Tavernier was the club’s top scorer (24 goals) in the 2023-24 campaign, while Cyriel Dessers (22) and loanee Abdullah Sima (16) also chipped in with important strikes.
Rangers enter next season’s Champions League at the third qualifying round in August after finishing behind rivals Celtic this term.
Rangers must sign ‘next McCoist’ this summer, says Wyness
Wyness insisted there will be “a lot of pressure” on the shoulders of any new striker arriving at Ibrox.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think they need a figurehead and a focal point up front this summer.
“They’ve got to bring in an Ally McCoist-type player somehow and get a talisman through the door.
“It’s going to be a lot of pressure on those shoulders, but Rangers have got to do all they can to get that striker in.
“He can then become the focus of a team that can then become a scoring machine again.

“They were lacking goals last year and the club need to do everything to get someone in to fix that.
“For the fans, for the team – the number nine position is crucial.”
