Rangers told to finalise big-money deals – ‘it’s absolutely critical’

Rangers have been told to agree big-money deals as it’s an “absolutely critical” part of their development under the new owners.

The Scottish giants have largely failed to make money on players in recent years after several of their signings have underwhelmed at Ibrox.

Rangers made just £8million profit on player sales between 2015 and 2021, but that figure has risen to around £41million over the past three accounting periods.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Rangers need to start developing youth players as the club look to increase their profits.

The Glasgow side’s revenue improved from £83.8million to a record-breaking £88.3million in 2023-24, but their net losses surged by £4.1million to £17.2million.

Rangers failed to win a trophy in the latest campaign as they finished 17 points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table, ensuring they will enter the Champions League in the second qualifying round.

Rangers could make big profits

Borson insisted Rangers need to find the balance between selling players and keeping a strong enough squad together to qualify for the Champions League.

He told Football Insider: “I think youth players are going to also be an absolutely critical part of the next phase of the ownership.

“It’s how do you develop a successful youth system such that you’re able to again make big profits from player sales? That will be the big test.

“They have to start doing that. They have to start selling better and generating profits from that.

“Then of course, they need to match that with being able to get into the Champions League because that’s where all the cash is.

“So, it’s finding that balance between selling your best players for good profits and also keeping the squad strong enough to qualify for the Champions League.”
