Rangers TV man ‘feels sorry for’ Turnbull as Celtic footage is screened

Alan Hutton ‘feels sorry for’ David Turnbull after he was sent off for Celtic against St Johnstone on Saturday (24 December).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers defender said although Turnbull’s tackle wasn’t intentional, it had to be a red card.

As shown on Sky Sports (25 December), the 23-year-old was booked for a high tackle on St Johnstone goalkeeper Remi Matthews on Saturday (24 December).

Referee Kevin Clancy was instructed by VAR official Mike Roncone to have another look at the incident and upgraded the midfielder’s punishment to a straight red card.

As quoted by the Scotsman (24 December), Ange Postecoglou said he did not think Turnbull’s high challenge was intentional and thought a yellow card was a suitable punishment.

When asked if a red card was the correct decision, Hutton told Football Insider:I think it was.

It is dangerous at the end of the day when you are jumping that high with your foot at that level. It does hit his face so it is only really going to go one way.

Celtic

It is unfortunate, he is going for the ball it is just that his foot is really high and it is in a dangerous position. So I understand why it is a red card.

He has not meant it. You feel sorry for him because he has not gone out there to injure him, he has gone for the ball. It is just when your foot is that high it is going to be dangerous.
