Rangers TV pundit issues home truths to Morelos after 'kick up the backside'

Alfredo Morelos is no longer the “go-to guy” at Rangers, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted his omission for the 4-2 win against Ross County will be a “wake-up call” for the 25-year-old.

Morelos’ axing from the Rangers squad on Sunday comes just weeks after manager Steven Gerrard fired the Colombia international a stark warning.

As quoted by the Guardian last month (October 20th), Gerrard said it was “quite obvious” that Morelos “isn’t at his best” after his poor form so far this term.

The 25-year-old striker has also been left out of the Colombia squad for this month’s qualifiers against Brazil and Paraguay.

When asked for his reaction to Morelos’ omission from the Rangers side, Hutton told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “This will be the wake-up call he needs, I think.

“Gerrard has tried multiple ways of getting the best out of him – putting his arm around him, giving him a kick up the backside, and now leaving him out of the team.

“I think he needs this. In past seasons, Morelos has been the go-to guy for Rangers because he is so important.

“But now, there are so many options for that front line. He doesn’t need to heavily rely on Morelos for output.

“It’s come to the stage that if he isn’t working hard enough in training, not performing on game day – then he won’t be playing.

“The ball is in his court. He will need to step up, or he’ll be on the bench.”

Fashion Sakala led the line against Ross County after impressing in recent performances.

Morelos has netted just seven goals in 20 Rangers appearances across all competitions.
