Rangers TV pundit issues ‘huge news’ claim after Gerrard’s Newcastle confession

Alan Hutton has insisted Steven Gerrard will be “fully focused” on his current job as Rangers boss despite links to Newcastle United.

However, the former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, conceded that the Ibrox boss “knows there’s interest” in his services.

As quoted by BBC Sport (15th October), Gerrard refused to engage in the speculation over a potential move back to the Premier League as manager of the Tyneside club.

However, he admitted “everyone connected in the game is looking on with interest” at Newcastle.

The Magpies confirmed this week Bruce left his post by mutual consent.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (October 12th) that Gerrard is among the top three managerial targets for the new Newcastle regime.

Hutton hailed the “fantastic job” the Liverpool legend has done with Rangers.

He insisted the 41-year-old will be trying to put the speculation to one side.

“I think Gerrard’s right – everybody is interested,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He’s batted the question away by opening it up to everybody because we’re all interested. It’s huge news in the world of football.

“He knows there’s interest in him. It just shows what a fantastic job he’s done to be linked alongside the likes of some of these managers.

“He’s got a job to do at Rangers and he’s got great respect for Steve Bruce. He probably doesn’t want to talk too much about it.

“But at the end of the day, everyone is interested in what’s going on at Newcastle.

But he’ll be fully focused on Rangers and he’s trying to put the speculation to the side.”

Gerrard took the Rangers reins in 2018 and won his first league title with the club last season.

The Ibrox club lead the way this term, one point clear of Hearts at the Scottish Premiership’s summit.
