Rangers TV pundit says ‘that’s who I want’ as he issues Auchenhowie training claim

Alan Hutton has suggested the Rangers squad will be “buzzing” in training after being drawn against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit insisted Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the players will want to test themselves against the Bundesliga heavyweights.

As confirmed on Monday (13 December), Rangers will face the German giants in their play-off clash next year.

The first leg is scheduled to take place at the Westfalenstadion on February 17th.

Dortmund will then visit Ibrox seven days later.

Hutton admitted the new format for the Europa League may seem “unfair” for the runners up in the group stage.

However, he insisted the Rangers players would be excited at the prospect of facing Dortmund.

Hutton told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge: “I’d be buzzing for it. I understand all the hype that goes around it, ‘oh no, it’s Borussia Dortmund, one of the best teams in Europe with Haaland’.

“That’s who I want to play against. I’m pretty sure Van Bronckhorst the players will be saying this is a real test for us.

“One of the top German teams coming to Ibrox. I think the whole club will be excited about this, the European night under the lights.

“I was hoping for Barcelona. Dortmund, of course, it’s very difficult. It’s going to be really difficult to progress.

“But you stay in that game, the away game in the the first leg, and you’ve always got an opportunity back at Ibrox.

“Make it a fortress, make it difficult for them. I’m pretty sure everyone will be excited about it.

“You’re getting a third-placed Champions League team dropping into the competitions. It’s a different standard of competition.

“I think it’s a little bit unfair but you can only play who’s in front of you. I think it’s a fantastic tie.”
