Rangers well placed to land £30m windfall after Dessers twist – Keith Wyness
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers will bank a windfall of over £30million if they qualify for the Champions League proper.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted the Gers are facing a “shortfall” in terms of being able to assemble a competitive squad for European fixtures.
Rangers looked set to lose the first leg of the third qualifying round against Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday (6 August) before a late twist which saw Cyriel Dessers equalise in the 94th minute.
The Glasgow club host the Ukrainian side at Hampden Park next week with the opportunity to advance and play FC Twente or Salzburg for a place in the league phase.
Rangers last made the group stage in the 2022-23 campaign but endured the worst campaign in history – conceding 22 goals and losing every game.
Rangers can bank £30m with Champions League qualification, says Wyness
Celtic have already qualified for the Champions League proper after winning the Scottish Premiership title.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is crucial.
“They’ve got a shortfall in terms of having the money to put a competitive European squad together.
“That’s the problem they’ve got with these qualifiers.

“If they get through these qualifiers and into the new format, that’ll be worth upwards of £30million – which is huge for the Scottish game.
“It’s a huge problem and it has to be addressed in some way in the market.”
