Rangers will be bombarded with Calvin Bassey bids after £25m update – pundit

There will be plenty of Premier League clubs interested in singing Calvin Bassey from Rangers if he is available for £25million, according to Alex McLeish.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Gers and Scotland manager claimed £25million would be a “bargain” for Bassey after his “amazing” recent displays.

The 23-year-old played a starring role for Rangers as they reached the Europa League final and lifted the Scottish Cup in the 2021-22 season.

Sky Sports reported last month (26 May) that the Ibrox club want at least £25million for the versatile defender which would be a new record for a Scottish club.

Bassey still has two years left to run on his Rangers contract so the club are under no immediate pressure to sell.

Asked whether he thought any clubs would be interested in signing the Nigeria international at that price, McLeish told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge: “Yes, I do.

“When it comes to Premier League, that is not huge money.

“I’ve seen players sign in the Premier League who are not household names, not seen too much of them or not really heard of them and a lot of them have failed.

“What we’ve seen with Bassey, we’ve seen him play at an amazing level against top teams. That makes a real difference.

“In terms of the price, you would probably be saying that is a bargain.”

Bassey played 50 times in the 2021-22 season and chipped in with six assists.

The four-time international moved to Ibrox from Leicester City for just £300,000 in the summer of 2020.
