Rangers will be forced to sell star players after confirmed news – Keith Wyness
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has warned Rangers will “certainly” need to sell some of their squad when new Uefa rules come in 2025.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested potential sales could form a healthy part of a rebuild at Ibrox, with the Glasgow giants needing to become more savvy with their recruitment.
In June 2023, Uefa altered their financial rules which limited the availability to spend on “player and coach wages, transfers and agent fees to 70 per cent of club revenue.”
Those new rules come into effect for the 2025-26 campaign and Rangers are likely to be among the clubs expected to comply – if they qualify for European competition.
Philippe Clement’s side are currently unable to compete with Old Firm rivals Celtic after a period of bad recruitment, while the Hoops have made mega-money through the sales of Matt O’Riley, Jota and more.
Rangers will be hit by Uefa rule change, says Wyness
Wyness suggested Rangers should look to follow the blueprint set by Celtic in future windows.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Rangers should be okay with the Uefa 70% rule.
“They’d certainly have to sell some of the squad, but they’ll find a way through this situation and should still be able to buy.
“Celtic have been able to buy a lot of international players, particularly in Japan and Asia.
“That’s what Rangers have got to look at now as well. Trading up, and selling on for a big profit.
“Rangers have not been great at that. They’ve got to use data better, bring in some real football operations people and find a solution.

“They’ve got a great base to work from but they’ve got to do more – and that’s part of the rebuild I’m talking about.
“Rangers have got it all wrong recently. Now they’ve got to rectify their mistakes in this rebuild.”
